Reiki

The word ‘Reiki’ means ‘mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign’. It is derived from the Japanese words ‘rei’ (universal) and ‘ki’ (life energy). In other modalities, life energy is also known as ‘prana’, ‘chi’, ‘mana’, ‘renda’ and life force energy.

WHAT IS REIKI

Reiki is a type of energy healing or alternative healing. It targets the energy fields around the body. Energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or emotional trauma. These energy blockages can eventually lead to illness if unaddressed or unhealed.

HANDS-ON HEALING

Reiki is mostly used by the laying on of hands or hands-on healing, but can also be practiced as a form of distance healing. Reiki activates the natural healing processes in the client’s body and restores physical and emotional well-being. The aim is to help the flow of energy and to remove any blockages to the energy in a way similar to, but less evasive than acupuncture or acupressure. This will improve the flow of energy around the body and assist with relaxation, pain reduction and the reduction or disappearance of illness or other unwanted symptoms.

CENTURIES OLD

Reiki has been around for thousands of years. Its current form was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui, who reportedly taught around 2000 people the Reiki method during his lifetime. The practice spread to the USA through Hawaii in the 1940s and gained popularity in Europe since the 1980s.

NO RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION

Reiki is not affiliated with any religion or religious practices. It is a gentle treatment with no side effects. Some hospitals in the USA and Europe offer Reiki treatments, which can be used on the frail, such as terminally ill patients, the elderly and even on new-born babies.

What can I expect from a session?

Reiki can be combined with other healing modalities. It is normally practiced in a peaceful setting with the client in a comfortable chair or on a massage table. There may be music. The client remains fully clothed whilst the practitioner will place their hands lightly on or over specific areas on the body. Clients may experience the energy as a tingling sensation, heat or cold.
